With eight hundred and forty-two examples built the
Class 5 is amongst the most successful mixed traffic
locomotives ever to run on Britain’s railways.
Commonly known as the Black 5 these Stanier designed
engines were the most widely used across the
network. These work horses often double-headed heavy
trains on heavily graded Scottish routes.
The locomotives were always in black livery, but
during LMS days a thin straw coloured lining was
used. In BR days red/white/grey lining was applied
and the locomotives carried both crests according to

This gas-fired, live steam, model is of beautifully
hand-made brass construction. The model features two
outside cylinders and fully operational Walschaerts
