JUBILEE HISTORY

Introduced in 1934 and designed by Sir William Stanier. Contemporary with the ubiquitous Black 5's, but with three cylinders, larger (6' 9"diameter) wheels and a larger boiler the Jubilees weighed 79 tons 11 cwt. Early locomotives had domeless boilers, but all later received domes with top feed located in front of the dome. With a tractive effort of 26,610lb the Jubilees were intended for intermediate express duties less arduous than performed by other Pacifics and Royal Scots.

The Jubilees were originally not named, but in 1935 during King George V's Silver Jubilee Year, it was decided to name a locomotive "Silver Jubilee". This locomotive was painted in gloss black livery with boiler fittings, handrails and numbers chromium plated.

Names for the remainder of the Class were typically chosen from countries of the British Empire, former Admirals and Warships.

A number of different tenders were allocated to the Jubilees throughout their working lives. Both Stanier 3500 and 4000 gallon tenders were used as well as 3500 gallon flat sided tenders. In 1958 it was decided that the whole Class should have 4000 gallon tenders - although it was 1964 before this aim was wholly achieved.

Apart from "Silver Jubilee" all other members of the Class in LMS days were painted maroon. After Nationalisation some locomotives were turned out in light green livery and others in lined black. After this BR lined green livery was adopted.
